Google Instant (sorta) comes to Firefox courtesy of an extension

File this one under "a screenshot doesn't do it justice," but if you've been wanting Google Chrome's Instant integration in Firefox, a new extension may be exactly what you're looking for.

It's called InstantFirefox, and it does precisely what you'd expect. Start typing in the Awesome Bar, and InstantFirefox refreshes the Google search results below in real time. The InstantFirefox experience isn't as smooth as what Chrome offers, but it's certainly a capable alternative for Firefox users.

Panda Cloud Antivirus 1.3 adds Web and URL scanning, nixes the nag screens

Filed under:

Panda launched their lightweight Cloud Antivirus app just under a year ago, and it's already received a number of significant updates and improvements. Today, they're announcing the release of Cloud Antivirus 1.3 -- and a few more cool feature additions.

Probably the most significant addition is Cloud AV's ability to filter malicious URLs and websites -- regardless of which browser you're using. Using the Web filter does require installing a toolbar, but that's a trade-off some of your less security-minded friends and family might be willing to make.

Other changes include improvements to Cloud AV's behavioral and blocking rules, which Panda now updates on the fly. Cloud Antivirus also now updates all of its rules and even installs program updates without requiring user interaction. The icing on the v1.3 cake is Panda's decision to remove the nag screens.

Now, I'm not one to complain too much about a free antivirus program that pops up the odd banner advertising a company's paid products... but if Panda's willing to get rid of the nags in Cloud AV, that's just fine with me. You will still see a promotional pop-up for the pro version during the install process, but according to the official blog post that's all, folks.

Phillip Island Likely To Start MotoGP Season From 2012

The cold temperatures at Phillip Island two weeks ago once again raised the issue of whether it is wise to stage the Australian Grand Prix there right at the tail end of the Antipodean winter, when the weather can be very cold and wet. Valentino Rossi led the calls for the race to be moved to the start of the MotoGP season, which would be the Australian late summer.

Dorna CEO was very receptive to the idea of moving the race to earlier in the year, but his hands are tied by a couple of factors, meaning that this change is unlikely to happen for 2011. However, in an interview with Israeli TV journalist Tammy Gorali, Ezpeleta revealed that he will by pushing to make the change for the 2012 season. "For sure, we will change this for the following year if we can't change for next year," Ezpeleta told Gorali, adding that his preference would be for the race to start the season.

Wild Brothers Racing Hits 278.6 MPH at the Texas Mile

How fast can you go in a standing mile? Well if your name is Bill Warner, you can reach 278.6 MPH from a standing stop in a mile’s distance, and then slowdown in another half-mile of run-off. Helping Warnerachieve that impressive feat is a turbocharged 1299cc Suzuki Hayabusa that makes 650hp, which Warner methodically turned the screws on until he beat the previous record at the Texas Mile of 261.5 MPH. Elias Confirmed With LCR Honda For 2011

It's been clear for a long while now that Toni Elias would be returning to MotoGP for the 2011 season, for more than one reason. Many felt Elias should never have lost his ride at Gresini Honda at the end of 2009, after the feisty Spaniard finished the season in 7th position, ahead of a large group of riders who weren't forced out. And when the Spaniard wrapped up the inaugural 2010 Moto2 World Championship, it became unthinkable that he would not find a ride in the premier class.

The question was, who with? Of the factory rides, only Suzuki had an open spot, and that disappeared rapidly once Suzuki decided to scale back its involvement to just a single rider for 2011. That left only a satellite Honda or the Pramac Ducati squad, but after a difficult year with the Pramac team in 2008, Elias was not keen on that switch. With Interwetten Honda folding, and Honda and Dorna pushing for Hiroshi Aoyama to take the empty seat at Gresini, only LCR Honda was left. Current occupant Randy de Puniet had been slowly falling out of favor with team boss Lucio Cecchinello since breaking a leg at the Sachsenring, and so with some nudging from Dorna, the LCR team became the obvious seat for Elias to fill.

Here's the official press release announcing the move:

Samsung Continuum available Nov. 11, has 3.4-inch Super AMOLED display

Samsung Continuum

We're fully expecting the Samsung Continuum to be announced at Sammy's New York City event on Nov. 8, but that doesn't mean the phone will be available that day. (And that's how it goes, more often than not.) But it likely won't be long after that before the dual-screen phone will be available for purchase. Phone Arena has a screen shot showing the Continuum available in all Verizon retail channels on Nov. 11 -- just a week and a half later, and the same day that Big Red's Galaxy Tab goes on sale.

You can see the leaked shot after the break, which has a slew of expected specks and answers one big question for us: The Continuum has a 3.4-inch Super Super AMOLED screen on the main display. In the meantime, be sure to check out our preview of the Samsung Continuum, as well as our video hands-on, and ask us more in the forums.

Oh, and in slightly lower-end news, the Motorola Citrus (see our hands-on) will be available on Nov. 11, too. [Phone Arena]

Phras.in helps you decide which of two words you should use

phrasin

Here's something that I do all the time: when I want to know how to use a certain word or phrase, I just google it. And when I'm trying to decide on one of two options, I just google them both and see which one is more common, or how it works in a sentence. I use it a lot when I translate ("do people really say that?"), but I also use it when I just write in English.

And now, Phras.in lets me do the exact same thing, but I can do it in style (or is it "with style"? Exactly!) and a great deal faster. So, I just type the words "in style" in the top text box, and then I type "with style" in the bottom text box. By the time I'm done typing, I can see that "in style" got 43.4 million hits, while "with style" has only 23.5 million hits. The search is live, and it's super-fast; there's no Enter required. And clearly, "in style" wins.

But maybe I'm not sure, or I want to see how they're really used. I just have to hit the big Contextualize 'em button, and I get a whole bunch of Google results that show the phrases in their natural habitat.

It even works in Hebrew, so I guess it can handle pretty much anything that you throw at it (anything Google can handle, that is). It's very, very useful!

Theta Music Trainer helps you develop musical hearing

thetamusictrainer

I've always wanted to do something musical. But having received no musical education and not coming from a musically-inclined family, I find myself dreading the subject and feeling that it's all a bit too much for me. I'm speaking mainly of the theoretical side of it, which has to do with figuring out all of those scales and then telling them apart.

Theta Music Trainer has shown me that I might have a chance to grasp this music thing after all. It's composed of several Flash-based games, each of which is focused on an aspect of "educated listening." Here are three examples:

  • Paddle Pitch trains your ear to recognize "scale tones." It's basically Pong, but you use the number keys to move the paddle, and you need to move the paddle to whatever sound was played.
  • Melodic Drops plays two-note sequences, and you have to figure out the musical interval between the two notes (an octave, two identical notes, etc.).
  • Parrot Phrases is by far the hardest one. The game plays sequences of notes, and you have to play them back by ear on a virtual piano, keyboard, or guitar.

In its free form, Theta Music Trainer is a very limited demo; it lets you play only the first level of every game. But if you pay $7.95/mo, you get full access to all levels. That's what it says on the contact page, anyway, but I wasn't able to find out how to subscribe.

The idea is very, very good, and the execution feels solid. So, even if Theta Music Trainer isn't quite ready for prime time, this is definitely one to keep an eye on for your musical training.

iPhone bug lets anyone easily bypass the lock screen to look at your photos

iPhone holding it wrong (thanks, Gizmodo)Bad news: if you own an iPhone 4, be careful -- bypassing your lock screen is simply a matter of hitting "emergency call," dialling "###," presssing the call button, then immediately pressing the lock button. Voilá -- one cracked iPhone. After the break, there's a video of some Spanish Portuguese-speaking guy showing you how to carry out the exploit.

This bug, which will surely cause a cascade of clenching and face palming across the world -- or at least the portions of the world that can afford iPhones -- seems to only affect the iPhone 4, or the 3GS with iOS 4.1 installed. Apple hasn't commented yet, so we only have the comment threads of Neowin and Wired to work with, and the reports are mixed. It looks like the bug does not allow the running of applications, but it does allow full access to your address book, call history, and photo album.

No doubt this will develop (or blow up) throughout the day, and we'll be sure to bring you any updates as they happen.

HotKeyMan lets you easily set system-wide hotkeys

hotkeyman

"System-wide" hotkeys, also known as "global hotkeys," are keyboard shortcuts that work on every program -- such as Alt+F4 for closing the active window. They can be quite handy, especially once you become accustomed to using them.

If you want to add some global hotkeys to your system, the usual thing would be to learn how to use AutoHotkey. But AutoHotkey is a programming language, and not everyone is so keen on learning to code.

So if you just want to add some hotkeys without writing a single line of code, HotKeyMan is one possible solution. This freeware application provides a simple graphical interface for binding keys to operations, such as opening files, running applications, capturing the screen or active window, minimizing and maximizing windows, and more.

HotKeyMan doesn't do much more, though. It does have a "send keystrokes" option that could be used for more sophisticated automation, but otherwise, it's a simple application that doesn't try to go over the top. I think that's a good thing, really. Even a novice user can quickly learn to use it and set up the hotkeys they need.

Holla is an open-source Campfire alternative you can run on your own server

Campfire is a slick way for teams to communicate, collaborate, and share via the Web -- but if you're searching for a simple, free alternative, a new project called Holla is worth a look.

Holla is an open-source chat and file sharing Web app. While it lacks Campfire's more advanced features, like transcripts and voice calling, Holla still provides an elegantly simple way to assemble a group for keyboard-powered brainstorming sessions or socializing.

One of its best features is Gmail-style drag-and-drop uploading. As you can see, images that you upload are automatically displayed inline. Files of any type can be dropped in, and members of your chat can simply click to download.

Holla scales well to handheld devices, too. It felt every bit as snappy on my iPod touch as it did in my desktop browser (image after the break).

You can take developer Alex MacCaw's demo for a spin or download the code from GitHub and run it on your own server.

IBM patents system that uses hard drives to accurately measure earthquakes, predict tsunamis

It is with dubiously raised eyebrows that we bring you this gem: using accelerometers in hard disks to detect seismic activity, IBM can divine a wealth of natural disaster-related information.

These hard disk sensors are so sensitive that they can detect the tiniest of vibrations. The seismic data, along with the sensor's geographical location, are then sent to a mainframe computer to be processed. IBM can then interpret that data to tell emergency response teams where an earthquake hit with the most magnitude. "It tells them I need to go to this school; I don't need to worry about this bridge," explains Bob Friedland, one of the patent's inventors.

While this technology doesn't go as far as predicting the next major earthquake, it can predict the likelihood and direction of a tsunami following an earthquake. Presumably, though, this system can detect with greater accuracy the small foreshock tremors that can precede large earthquakes.

For more information, feel free to read through the patent.

Breaking: LimeWire P2P network shut down by RIAA

LimeWire squeezed by RIAAThe New York District Court, at the request of the RIAA, has forced LimeWire to shut down its network and cease distributing its software. TorrentFreak has the full story, and updates will surely follow as more data becomes available.

That a U.S. federal judge would finally grant RIAA's request comes as a numbing shock to the system. Perhaps the RIAA simply drew the right judge -- this is the same Judge Kimba Wood that found LimeWire guilty of copyright infringement back in May -- or maybe the lawsuit just snowballed in gravitas until it became unignorable.

For those of you that use BitTorrent, you might be surprised to hear that LimeWire is still most-installed P2P application with a market share of 37% -- uTorrent, by far the largest BitTorrent client, only has a 14% market share. If LimeWire really has been shut down -- and stays down -- this could affect the entire makeup of the Internet.

Is it raining in ... helps you answer one simple question

isitrainingin

For a Web 2.0 application, Is it raining in ... follows the book pretty closely. It is:

  • Minimalistic: This thing couldn't possibly be more bare-bones. There isn't a single image on the page.
  • Simple: Just go to http://isitraining.in/ and type a city's name. It will try to figure out the country on its own.
  • Nerd-friendly: The app URL format is very friendly, obviously meant to be used right from the browser without going through the main page first. For example, http://isitraining.in/the-pas.

And for all those reasons, I love it. It doesn't let you see just precipitation information, either; you can see the local time at the destination, a general description of the weather ("partly cloudy", etc), as well as the temperature.

The one Web 2.0 trend the developer bucked was omitting vowels from the URL, and I'm grateful for that. I wouldn't want to use istrnng.in or some other annoying variation on that theme. The existing URL is pretty much ideal, if you ask me.

The service seems to be supported through a thin line of Google text ads at the bottom. That's fairly unobtrusive. All in all, definitely one for the toolbox.
