Banshee media player for Windows goes alpha

banshee audio video player windows
Banshee has been one of the top Linux media players for ages, and now the venerable audio and video app has officially made its way to Windows. The first alpha release of Banshee for Windows is now available for download, and it's exactly what you would expect: it's very true to the Linux experience, and it's got a few kinks which still need working out before it's ready for prime time on Windows.

Like any good media player, Banshee offers features like smart playlist, podcast, audiobook, and online radio support, ID3 tag editing, song ratings, track information lookup, full screen mode, system tray playback controls, and toast notifications.

Unfortunately, it's still rather rough around the edges. Banshee's Last.fm features and equalizer caused numerous crashes, and the app eventually quit trying to play tracks after a handful of restarts. Rebooting Windows was the only way to get Banshee playing again.

Still, this is just the first alpha release! We're sure that things will improve quickly with future builds.

Firefox 4's best restartless add-ons

Unless you've been sleeping under a rock, or in a tent outside the Googleplex with an "I LOVE SCHMIDT" banner, you hopefully know that Firefox 4 supports restartless add-ons, or in developerese: bootstrapped extensions.

Unfortunately, however, the process of converting an existing add-on into a restartless wonder is far from simple. A few months ago, back when the Firefox 4 beta machine really got into the swing of things, the developer of the world's most popular add-on, Adblock Plus, described his laborious and infuriating attempt at making his add-on restartless -- and today, just a few days away from the final Firefox beta, there still isn't a single big-name restartless add-on to be found.

On the flip side, writing new restartless add-ons is a little easier. Uptake amongst developers still seems to be very slow, though. Add-ons for Firefox (AMO) only has about 80 add-ons tagged with 'restartless', and even less with the restartless add-on's SDK, 'jetpack'.

Then, of course, only a few of those add-ons are actually worth using! Read on for our pick of the best Firefox 4 restartless add-ons.

Firefox 4 for Mobile beta 5 released, try it on your Windows or Mac PC!

Not only is Firefox 4 for Mobile beta 5 ready to test on your Android or Maemo phone, but you can also download and run the browser on your Windows, Mac or Linux PC.

The new beta brings a slew of fixes and spit-shines, and for the first time it almost feels finished -- just in time, considering the final release is due in the next week or two. There are now over 100 mobile add-ons -- but, of course, in true Firefox beta fashion, fery few of them have been updated to work with the new beta. For a complete list of the changes and known issues, check the release notes.

Finally, you must check out the PC version of Firefox 4 for Mobile! It's an almost-perfect copy of the real deal: you can try out add-ons, and click-and-drag to simulate a touch interface. It's a lot easier to explore the (rather sexy) new UI with a proper desktop processor, and a keyboard and mouse, too.

There's QR code for the Android build after the break.

Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo coming 'in a few weeks'

firefoxJay Sullivan, Mozilla's vice president of products, has told the IDG News Service at the Mobile World Congress that Firefox 4 for Android will ship in a few weeks. We should expect to see one more beta version this week, and then the final build soon after.

Sullivan also tells IDG about Firefox for Mobile's extensive feature set -- 150 add-ons will be available! -- and Mozilla's overall move to a faster, quarterly release cycle.

Android already has a lot of competent browsers, but an HTML5-rendering, hardware-accelerated and sync-enabled offering would blow the rest of the competition out of the water.

Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter

Survival Lab
In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they're called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won't kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn't reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you're into the whole retro-gaming thing.
