Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

mitoza
While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You're then presented with two further choices -- a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There's no winning or losing, really. Each "game" usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it's a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you're at it.

HTC takes to the skies for new ad campaign

HTC

Update: We've added HTC's first teaser trailer for this ad campaign after the break.

The HTC One series launches in Europe next week, and HTC's pulling out all the stops in the marketing effort for its new smartphones -- the One X, One S and One V. The new marketing strategy, dubbed "As Recommended By", sees HTC bringing fans and enthusiasts on-board to showcase leading features of their new phones.

The first commercial for the One X features amateur photographers Nick Jojola and Tony Mac, and challenges them to shoot what HTC describes as the "world's first freefall fashion shoot" using the phone. The results will be unveiled when the ad launches next Wednesday, April 4, but for the moment HTC's released a few photos showing how the whole thing went down.

As you'll recall from MWC, the One X's 8MP ImageSense camera is a widely-hyped feature, which aims to deliver much-improved image quality and faster capture speeds thanks to a dedicated image chip and RAW format support.

We've got a couple more pictures of HTC's skydiving antics, along with today's presser, after the break.

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

battlepaint
In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you're not even a cube -- just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That's important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal.

List of Bell Android 4.0 updates appears with timelines for each device

Bell Android Updates

While we're now starting to see Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich more frequently, be it through leaks or official builds there is still plenty of devices out there that have not yet received the update. One carrier that maintains a lot of Android devices in Canada is Bell and now, their Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich roadmap has appeared:

No device on the list is really a surprise, they've all been confirmed previously but for some the wait times may be a little depressing or pleasing depending on your expectations. But like all things -- it's subject to change so hopefully we'll see the updates arrive earlier.

Late-night poll: How much internal storage is enough?

Internal storage

Since the Samsung Nexus S, phones shipping without an external SDcard slot have caused controversy. We've got a trio of new phones right around the corner from HTC that are shipping without. We hear, and understand, both sides of the issue. Not everyone wants to stream and use cloud services, so they need the flexibility that a huge amount of storage can give. On that note, if manufacturers want to get rid of the SDcard, they need to give people enough internal storage. Which leads us to tonight's poll.

How much is enough? I'm all in the cloud, and it's too late for me to turn back. I get by fine with 16GB, and could probably never miss a beat with only 8GB. Many of you are the opposite -- don't care for the cloud and want to store their stuff on their device. They need a lot more storage than I do. Where do you fall? Let us know in tonight's poll.

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox
A while back, we told you about AVG's new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG's odd choice of monikers -- LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it's lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG's strong presence on Android we wouldn't be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can't even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you're not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

google voice search
Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google's official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search's polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Conserve Your Budget with iPad Rental

Technology does not have to break your budget if you consider an iPad rental rather than a purchase. The cost to purchase an iPad outright can be extremely high. Many people may not have that kind of cash handy. Additionally, Most wireless/3G companies lock the customer into lengthy agreements that may end up being far from perfect. iPad rentals also give the customer the freedom to move on, or stay put if desired. Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5

torus
As far as Tetris goes, most variations look quite similar. You're usually looking at a "wall" of bricks directly from the front. Torus takes that notion and throws it away; as you might have guessed from the name (or screenshot), this Tetris clone is played on a ring-like 3D surface.

You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.

Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn't really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus' 3D format.

Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It's also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.

Bottom line: It's an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.

Intel: Ultrabooks Offer More Choice, Better Value Than MacBook Air or iPad

With the superhigh-resolution third-generation iPad selling like hotcakes, and a refresh of the MacBook Air expected soon, Windows-based laptops are seemingly becoming a dying breed in this "post-PC," Apple-dominated era.

Intel, however, is not fazed, and believes that the new class of superthin Ultrabooks can offer everything that the iPad and MacBook Air do--and more.

I sat down with Intel product manager Anand Kajshmanan and Intel media relations representative Alison Wesley to discuss what Ultrabooks really offer, and what we can look forward to in Ultrabooks that we probably won't see from tablets and similar laptops.

[RELATED: Intel Ivy Bridge Chips Launch Dates Leaked]

PCWorld: It’s a pretty exciting time for people to buy laptops and mobile devices, with so many great models to choose from now. Obviously Intel is very invested in Ultrabooks. Can you tell us a little about Ultrabooks and what makes them different?

Intel: Ultrabooks Offer More Choice, Better Value Than MacBook Air, iPadIntel: "Ultra" means pinnacle, and we wanted the Ultrabook to be the pinnacle of everything that users have come to expect from their computing device. So we did extensive research into what users' expectations were for their mobile computing devices, and there were four things that really stood out.

Users want ultra-responsiveness in their devices (you turn it on and it just works, with no interruptions); the ability to take their devices everywhere, with great battery life and connectivity; devices that just look cool and feel great; and products they don't have to worry about when it comes to security.

When we came up with this category, we wanted to deliver all of these things in one device--and not only one device, but a plethora of choices, so each person can pick [the right Ultrabook].

PCW: Many Ultrabooks look a lot like Apple’s MacBook Air. How are Ultrabooks different from the Air, and why would a person choose an Ultrabook over the more popular Air?

MacBook AirMacBook AirIntel: The MacBook Air is a great product, sure. It has the Intel Core processor, it's a great choice for someone who wants to invest in the Mac operating system, and it offers some of the things we talked about. But really, with the Ultrabook, it's about offering all those things in the same device--the great responsiveness, the great battery life--and with an operating system that people have come to love over the years, as well as all the legacy applications that they would like to run.

And they want to do all this at mainstream price points, which is where we think one of the biggest key differentiators is, and the biggest value that Intel can bring to this space. We can actually get the ecosystem to move to an extent [that it will] bring all of these great features in a laptop down to mainstream price points.

PCW: What do you mean by "mainstream price points"?

Intel: We say "mainstream price points" rather than exact figures because it differs for every market and depends on your perspective. For example, [we were speaking with] a Korean businessperson at a trade show who said that $1000 was a very low price point for them. But $1000 might be high from your perspective, so we say "mainstream price point" to mean what the market will bear.

We have the $300-million Intel capital fund to kick-start this innovation, and we're bringing everyone together and saying, hey, this is a great opportunity. We're definitely working with our partners to supply a lot more volume, which will bring Ultrabooks down to the mainstream price points.

PCW: That’s great, because price is, I think, still the biggest barrier for people when it comes to buying an Ultrabook.

Intel: Right. We definitely want all of these things--the ultra-responsiveness, the security, and the great battery life--in ultralight systems, with the operating system users have come to love, to be available to the mainstream consumer.

The Power of Choice

PCW: Well, consumers definitely have a lot of Ultrabooks to choose from already.

UltrabooksIntel: It's all about choice. That was one thing that kept coming back in all the research. Consumers want more choice. It's such a huge market, and everyone's different. What works for one person doesn't work for another person.

But even though there's a variety of choices, a good thing about the Ultrabook specification is that, whether you like an Acer model or a Dell one better, there's still a set of experiences you can count on.

PCW: You’re pushing for touchscreen options in Ultrabooks too. That’s an option that Apple doesn’t seem interested in exploring for its laptops. Tell me more about touch Ultrabooks. Won’t the touchscreens drive up the prices on Ultrabooks and keep them from being affordable?

Intel: We fundamentally believe in the concept of touch, and touch on a clamshell. We believe it's going to take off in 2012 or at least 2013, especially with Windows 8. It really feels like now is the right time, now that the hardware and software are working really well together. We're strongly encouraging our partners to incorporate touch on the Ultrabooks.

Lenovo YogaLenovo YogaWe expect several touchscreen laptops in convertible form factors, like the Lenovo Yoga, to show up later this year, as well as screens that swivel around and slide over the keyboard.

In terms of cost, yes, the touchscreens definitely will add to it. There's no doubt about that, but it's hard to say now how much it will add. It's up to the consumer whether it will be worth [the investment]. For example, if there's a touchscreen Ultrabook for $800 versus one without for $700, at least the option will be there. Again, it's all about choice.

PCW: Speaking of touch, though, with Apple’s recent launch of the superhigh-resolution iPad and repeated mention of this being a "post-PC" era, can Ultrabooks even compete? What do you say about the notion that the $500 iPad is killing off the PC?

Intel: The Ultrabook offers an extremely unique value proposition. Every time we've done market research, consumers have told us, "We love touch, but don't touch our keyboards." Even for email, people prefer keyboards. There's no tactile feedback on touchscreens.

The fact that you have content creation on Ultrabooks is a huge differentiator. Plus, with all the unique form factors, as we said, to be able to use the Ultrabook as a tablet when you want to is an extremely unique value proposition.

Consumers have told us that tablets are great for certain things like content consumption and casual gaming, but when there's real work to be done, they really like to do it on a laptop.

What's Next?

PCW: So what can we expect next on Ultrabooks?

UltrabooksIntel: Besides touch, going forward in 2012 and 2013 we're going to be demonstrating other modes of interaction. As we get better and better processing power, and as our next generations of CPUs show up, we'll be able to integrate other capabilities and hardware technologies such as sensors or accelerometers into the Ultrabook. So, for example, if you want to find a café automatically or do some gaming, you'll be able to take advantage of those built-in technologies. We're really excited about these things, and we don't see a reason why you can't have them on an Ultrabook.

We don't think of the Ultrabook as stagnant, but as a work in progress--and you'll see even more capabilities and technologies in the Ultrabook.

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9
Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon
Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you're viewing -- such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder's view style.

It's clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It's slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There's more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That's not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

Tasty Planet is a fun flash game where you eat everything in sight

tastyplanet
So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by "eating" the dirt; or so he thinks. That's how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you're not really a toilet cleaner after all -- you're a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that's smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow -- and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it's a really cute game, and there's no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you're able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can't touch any critter larger than yourself - you'll get "bitten" and become smaller. In the beginning you're so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you're big enough that touching larger animals doesn't kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you're not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don't touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It's available for iOS, too.
