Send links from any browser to any smartphone -- with just a bookmarklet
The world's most graceful and simple solution for pushing links to your smartphone has just emerged. It's called Site to Phone, and it works for every major Web browser. Theoretically, it works for every smartphone OS, too; iOS, webOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry -- and maybe even Symbian.Instead of requiring Chrome, or being restricted to just Android or iOS, this solution uses the most basic technologies ever: a JavaScript bookmarklet, and a website bookmark on your phone. It's so stupefyingly simple: the bookmarklet sends your current website to Site to Phone, and when you click the bookmark on your phone, you are redirected to that site. You put the Site to Phone bookmark on your phone's home screen, so it's always just one tap away.
If you don't want to use a bookmarklet, you can just visit the Site to Phone website and paste a link in -- once you save it, the link is immediately active on your phone. There is also a Chrome extension or Internet Explorer add-on, if you prefer.
It's hard to describe just how well it works; it's best if you just give it a go yourself. You don't even have to register: just visit Site to Phone, begin the process, and then type a unique URL into your phone. So, so easy.

The Humble Indie Bundle is back, with Braid, Machinarium, and a real-time counter
The site itself has been significantly overhauled, too. At the top, there's a 'buzz bar', showing all of the recent tweets. There's also a real-time counter that ticks up every time a purchase is made -- and I'm glad to say that since I've started writing, it's moved quickly, from 1500 to over 3000!
Most importantly, because you can pay whatever you like for the bundle, there's now a bunch of sliders that control what percentage of your donation goes to each group. You can give all of the money to the game developers, or every last cent to charity -- but the default is a 66/33 split.
The games, if bought separately, would cost around $85... so while you could get all five games for free, consider giving a few dollars at least. If you can't afford one of the five Steam games in our holiday gift guide, the Humble Indie Bundle would make a great gift, too.

McDonalds hacked, customer database stolen, your burger preference now in the wild
Don't worry, this one isn't quite as bad as the Gawker hack: McDonalds -- and over 100 other firms -- have had their marketing databases compromised, and summarily stolen. An email marketing company called Silverpop is to blame for the breach -- and fortunately, 'only' real names, interests and email addresses were breached; no passwords, and no Social Security or credit card numbers were stolen.While McDonalds is probably the biggest name on the list, it seems the creative users of deviantART are also affected -- and a brief look at Silverpop's site suggests it might have upset some other very big names, such as Mazda and the banking giant Santander.
There's no information about how the hack was achieved, but the FBI has said that the attack originated from outside the US. In all likelihood, the attack was probably carried out by spammers, or the operatives of spammers. An email address database the size of Silverpop's would sell for millions.

Radiohead for Haiti charity DVD now available on BitTorrent and YouTube as donationware
Radiohead, a British band that made waves by offering its latest studio album for free or "pay what you want", has just endorsed a community-made DVD of its Haiti earthquake charity concert from January 2010. The DVD is downloadable for free via BitTorrent, and you are strongly encouraged to donate as much as you can to Oxfam's Haiti Earthquake and Recovery Fund. Creation of the video was a labor of love; video footage from 14 cameras has been used, and you can choose from four different audio tracks, all recorded by different people. Three Radiohead fans, inez, formengr and andrea, have spent the last year collecting the various sources and compiling them into the definitive video of the concert, and boy have they done a good job.

Freemake Video Converter adds Blu-Ray support, Web video downloading
Freemake 2 now supports Blu-Ray burning, allowing you to output dozens of hours of downloaded video to a single disc. If you don't have a Blu-Ray burner, no worries -- Freemake claims their media conversion kung-fu lets them cram 20 hours onto a single-layer DVD.
The upgrade doesn't stop there, however. Freemake 2 also adds the ability to download and convert videos directly from popular sharing sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Metacafe. Beyond sharing sites, Freemake can also grab video from Hulu, South Park Studios, The Daily Show, Megavideo, and several others -- including a good number of sites in the red light district. There's also a more full-featured preset editor, giving you advanced control over your default conversion settings.
The .Net 4.0 framework is required, but Freemake will install it for you if it's not already on your system.
